On July 2, 2013, not one but two new Pretty Lights albums were released: A Color Map of the Sun and its essential companion, Live Studio Sessions From A Color Map of the Sun. The first PL efforts to be sold commercially after a series of acclaimed free-download albums and EPs, the Color Map project represents a turning point in Pretty Lights mastermind Derek Vincent Smith’s artistic growth. A self-professed “sample collage” artist, Smith decided it was time to create his own. “Before, I’d combine 25 samples into one song,” he explains. “This time, I was going to create my own original sources, retaining the timbre that spans the great musical era of the last century – from modern classical and jazz, to ‘60s soul and beyond.”

It's been nearly three years since Pretty Lights – Denver hip-hop producer and EDM-festival star Derek Vincent Smith – issued a new record, instead concentrating on his ultra-opulent live show. But his newest makes up for lost time: two hours of surprisingly consistent stoner jams with congruent but very different halves. Disc One plays like bubblegum DJ Shadow: penetrating psych funk with the occasional corny touch (Talib Kweli sleepwalks through "Around the Block"). Smith constructed these from vinyl pressings of live-band grooves he'd composed.

"So this is the 2nd EP of my 2010 trilogy. Its called "Spilling Over Every Side" I created it pretty much everywhere, as a majority of the production took place while I was touring over the last 4 months. It isn't a new concept for me, touring and working on an album simultaneously.. but this time around it was pretty intense, there wasn't much time for anything else. I really tried to push my style with this EP and explore several different genres, sometimes within the same song. The songs are long and there are a lot of parts... I guess, because thats what I want to hear... fresh, intricate, beats that attempt to communicate ideas or tell a story somehow. Another idea I implemented on this EP more than once, is the transitioning between something pretty and organic to something heavy and electro. A sort of dimension flip.. something I've done in the past.. but I really tried to push it with these tracks. Anyway, I hope you like it, I do." -Derek Vincent Smith (Pretty Lights)

Michal Menert was born in Kielce, Poland, in 1982, while the country was under communist rule. As a young child, he and his parents fled to the United States by way of West Germany, becoming political refugees. During his childhood, Michal's father exposed him to a wide variety of Eastern and Western music, giving the boy fertile soil in which to plant his musical visions early on. Coming from a musical background of playing guitar, keyboards, and dabbling in a variety of other instruments gave Michal a unique approach to composing his own musical style. He co-produced the debut Pretty Lights album, "Taking Up Your Precious Time" and has collaborated with Derek Vincent Smith on a handful of tracks since then. Currently he is releasing a solo album, entitled "Dreaming of A Bigger Life" on prettylightsmusic.com. His sound combines samples from both Eastern European and Western vinyl with rich analog synthesis and organic, hard hitting beats. It is a fusion of yesterday's elements and tomorrow's dreams. Sample-crazy producer Pretty Lights has had a career akin to many recent hip-hop acts who have seen their careers blow up thanks to blogs and free albums. Every project he has released thus far has been free, with most of his money presumably being made through donations and touring. His latest effort is the free EP Making Up a Changing Mind, the first in a three-part series to be released this year. And it's more of what listeners have come to expect from Pretty Lights. The six tracks on here offer a blend of wild breakbeats, an endless supply of samples from across the genre spectrum, and synthesizers galore.
