Fat Thumbs Ronnie (A Unity Sextet Release) - Time To Shine

Fat Thumbs Ronnie (A Unity Sextet Release) - Time To Shine

release: 09.11.2012
style: jazz nujazz broken beats funk
format: 320kbps mp3

When The Unity Sextet released their debut album in January 2012 it came as a real surprise. Rarely in the last few years a full-on live band captured the spectrum The Unity Sextet embraced with their unique sound and vision: The open-minded grooves of the Sixties, the spiritual instrumental craftsmanship of the Seventies, the sense of global unity discovered with Acid Jazz in the Eighties, the immediacy and realness of Nineties’ HipHop, all captured in a style and sound which is distinctively „Now“. With “Time To Shine” Buddy Franco, Fats Young Jr., Cassius Farqhuar, Junior Oliver, Chuck Waldron and Fat Thumbs Ronnie introduce the second chapter of their musical story. Fat Thumbs Ronnie, piano wizard and master of synthesizers, already worked on a collection of his own compositions during the initial Unity Sextet album sessions, but only during this summer after the release of his band’s album he was ready to record. Needless to say, the whole Unity team was on the spot, so were guest musicians Lukas Drinkwater on guitar and Charlie Hearnshaw on saxophone. „Time To Shine“, as Ronnie called his debut solo collection of eleven tracks, is a love affair with chilled-out, smart rhythms and some expert keyboard work, perfectly put in scene by producer Lack Of Afro: “He was able to get tings out of us we weren’t aware of that they were actually there. That’s quite an achievement if you take into account that we are a little weird bunch of hopeless ego-driven jazz musicians. Nice one!” Check out tracks like “The Betrayal” with its cinematic soundscape taken straight of a French movie of the Seventies, the first class dancefloor jazz of “The Playhouse” or the extra-smooth samba mover “Major Minus”: “Time To Shine” is more like a mere follow-up to The Unity Sextet’s debut, it has its own sparkling moments.

  1. Sorry. This band can't exist. Must be Lack Of Afro doin' all the work. None of the musicians seem to exist. I discovered they used a Marc Moulin track from 2002 as it is with some overdubs on their first lp. Any insights would be helpfull!
